‘Milk and Honey’ Project Workshop with Warsan Shire
In celebration of International Women’s Month Day and Month in March 2022, we were happy to support the Milk & Honey Project to host an empowering and inspiring workshop with author and poet Warsan Shire for approximately 40 young women and teenage girls at our branch community space.
The event was the brainchild of founder of Milk and Honey, Ebinehita Iyere. Ebinehita works with young people who are affected by the youth justice system therapeutically for them to heal but also to divert them from crime using relational and creative methods. Milk and Honey was founded in 2017 and is a creative and expressive safe space for young women to thrive and take ownership of H.E.R. (Healing, Empowerment and Resilience).
Warsan Shire is the first 'Young Poet Laureate of London' who rose to prominence after she wrote the poetry for Beyonce's award-winning album 'Lemonade'' and also for the Disney film 'Black is King'. She led the groups through reading and discussion of some of her poems from her inaugural poetry book ‘Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head’ which was being launched on that same day by Penguin Publishers. It was a captivating and inspiring experience, and the attendees were really delighted to meet, share and connect with Warsan Shire.
