JESA UK Chapter Reception & Retreat Ceremony
In celebration of Black History Month, JN Bank UK was pleased to host the Jamaica Ex-Soldiers Association (JESA) UK Chapter, at our branch on Monday October 16th. The event was a reception and retreat ceremony in honour of the veterans who served their homeland and with other Jamaican allies bravely. For most of the attendees, these years of selfless service were achieved during their tenure as part of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).
There were also several veterans of the British Army and a current officer from the Metropolitan Police (Brixton Station) in attendance to give their support.
Guest speaker at the event was Major Heleda Thompson JP, MSc. who is the Director of Veterans Affairs at the JDF. She represented the JDF’s Chief of Staff - Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss Gorman CD. She applauded the veterans and the network of support they have for each other. She encouraged them to keep the bond vibrant and strong.
JESA UK Chapter Chairman, Orville Dorman, said the day was specially chosen, as it coincides with National Heroes Day in Jamaica. He said that he wanted his fellow, former soldiers to feel valued and appreciated for their important and outstanding contribution to society.
The day’s event started with a flag raising ceremony aboard HMS Belfast in London. At the reception, the soldiers had a wonderful time, sharing stories and songs, reminiscing about army folklore such as ‘Nelson’s blood’ and remembering their time in service.
What a lovely evening! The JN Bank UK team was pleased and honoured to have hosted these veterans at our branch community space.
